Looking after mind and body
In November 2018, we began implementing our Healthy Dancer programme, a major new initiative which places Ballet West at the forefront of professional dance training.
Inspired by the most prestigious dance companies around the world, our new clinical and therapeutic team is working closely with the artistic team to build more robust dancers who will be better equipped to cope with the physical, psychological and emotional demands of their elite athletic training.
This has involved the refurbishment and re-equipping of our gyms, expansion of our student spaces and employment of physiotherapists, body conditioning instructors and an in-house counsellor.
COUNSELLING AND WELLBEING
We know that taking care of your mental health is paramount to not only your happiness, but also your motivation, physical wellbeing, injury prevention and rehabilitation and best performance too.
To this end, Ballet West have invested in a dedicated Counselling and Wellbeing service run by Caroline McLaughlin MBACP. Caroline is a counsellor and psychotherapist with 8 years Counselling experience and 14 years experience in Youth Work and Mental Health Advocacy.
Caroline offers a unique service which is tailored, collaboratively with each individual dancer to meet their needs.
Brief solution focused therapy – working on specific problems together to find ways forward, agree courses of action and reflect on progress or obstacles.
Psychotherapy – working with more general or recurring problems to explore underlying issues or subconscious processes.
Stress management workshops – An introduction to the Physiology of stress, neurobiology and recovery strategies for temporary and chronic stress states.
One-off events and workshops in line with the current needs of the students.

Dance specific physiotherapy
We want to provide a physiotherapy assessment that includes dance technique and dance normalised ranges of motion in order to get an accurate diagnose but also understand the limitations and impact in dance class and performance.
Following assessment, students will have access to acute and chronic injury rehabilitation and long term management. We aim to coordinate treatment with class and choreographic demands to minimise time away from dance and promote a safe return to practice.
